Day 1
We began our day with coffee and a grab-and-go breakfast at Baby's Coffee (https://babyscoffee.com/) because it was only minutes away from our RV resort. The staff was very friendly, and besides offering a variety of coffee drinks, they had grab-and-go bagel sandwiches and pastries. The store also sold other small goods, and we were able to enjoy our coffee and breakfast outside at a picnic table.
Afterward, we stopped at Sugarloaf Key Marina to check if they had any boat rentals available for the week. Due to a couple of cancellations, we lucked out and found a pontoon boat available, which we secured for Wednesday. Back at the resort, we enjoyed a long walk and relaxed. You can find out more info on the boat rental with this link. (https://www.backcountryboatrentals.biz/)
For lunch, we headed into Key West from Bluewater Key RV resort. I had researched popular restaurants and chose The Schooner Wharf Bar (https://www.schoonerwharf.com/menu.htm). As we walked into the restaurant, tables with large bright umbrellas welcomed us. We found a table not far from the stage where a female played some chill music. The restaurant was cozy and had a relaxed, casual, island vibe. Our server was attentive, and the food hit the spot.
Afterward, we walked around the wharf and noticed many other restaurant options and some gift shops. We made the short walk over to Duval Street to check out the scene and then headed back to the RV.
I guess we were feeling very ambitious to get out and about, so after enjoying some pool time, we went back to the Wharf that evening for dinner at A&B Lobster House, (https://aandblobsterhouse.com/) a place we had seen earlier that day. It appeared to be a popular staple in the area. While we enjoyed our dinner there, we felt it was a little overpriced for average food and would not rush back.
After dinner, we took a quick stroll around the area and took in the pretty Christmas lights and the Christmas tree decorated at the wharf.
Day 2
After a light breakfast in the RV and a walk around the resort, we went back into Key West to explore Duval Street. After all, it seems to be one of the largest attractions in Key West. On our way there, which wasn’t exactly on the way, we drove past the southernmost point buoy. It was 11 AM, and there was a long line of tourists waiting to take their picture with the buoy. While we wanted to do this ourselves, we had a feeling this was going to be the closest we got since neither of us had an interest in waiting in line.
It was a bit of a rainy day in Key West with on-and-off drizzle. We walked along Duval Street and decided upon a cute, casual, outdoor place with a bar situated against the main drag called Caroline’s Cafe. (https://carolinescafe.com/) A good place for sightseeing, we posted up at the bar and ordered a couple of drinks and lunch. We really enjoyed the conch fritters and the shrimp BLT.
The rain continued to drizzle, but the sunshine came out as we made it back to the RV resort. So, we threw on our bathing suits and made our way to the pool before some of our family arrived that evening. We were ready for a night in and after welcoming our family’s arrival, we hung out at our RV site and cooked up some dinner on the grill.
Day 3
This was the most gorgeous, sunniest day of all so we started our morning with a walk and then got packed up to take our pontoon rental out for the day. With helpful directions from the marina, my husband, a seasoned boat owner, captained our pontoon and took us out into the clear blue waters of the Keys. We stopped at a couple of different sandbars, our nieces snorkeled, we explored a hidden beach, and took in the beautiful weather and scenery.
That evening we somehow had the energy to get ourselves ready for dinner, and we all headed into Key West for some hearty Italian at La Trattoria in their Old Town location. Overall, the meal filled our bellies, and while we decided we wouldn’t rush back, we were satisfied and ready for bed!
Day 4
We woke up to an overcast Thanksgiving morning. We all moved a bit slower and had a lazy morning at the RV site. We cooked up a big breakfast of pancakes, eggs, and bacon, and eventually, half of us moseyed on down to the pool while a couple of others stayed back and watched football on the outdoor TV.
We made dinner reservations on the earlier side as we knew our restaurant sat on the water, and we wanted to enjoy some sunset views. And that we did! We sat on the patio at One Duval, (https://www.oneduval.com/) and in our opinion, had one of the best tables in the house. We were able to take some good family photos with the ocean backdrop and watched the sun set. It set the tone for a very peaceful Thanksgiving dinner. They offered a traditional turkey dinner, prime rib, and their regular menu. Most of us enjoyed the turkey dinner, and it didn’t disappoint! The portions were plentiful, and all the fixings of a home-cooked Thanksgiving dinner were provided. Additionally, the staff was very friendly and attentive. We were happy with our choice!
Day 5
On our last full day in the Keys, we went back into Key West to walk around. We grabbed a decent lunch at the Conch Republic in the Wharf and then took my nieces to some shops. En route, we passed through the Sunset Grill and savored a margarita with ocean views and live music. My sister-in-law and niece chose to explore the Shipwreck Museum while the rest of us explored more shops and landed at the Hogsbreath Saloon.
After enough time in Key West, we headed back to the RV resort. The kids played and snorkeled in the canal behind our RV site, the adults relished some quiet time, and we grilled up delicious filet mignon for our final dinner.
While there are many attractions to visit in Key West, we chose to take a relaxed approach to the area without too much sightseeing. Waiting in lines wasn’t our idea of a relaxing time. However, if we go back, I think we may try to visit a couple attractions. We loved taking the boat out to mix things up and some of our family did a guided jet ski rental as well. I hope our 5-day itinerary gives you some ideas on what you can do in the Keys!
